POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD) / SURVIVOR GUILT
I provide Post-traumatic Stress Disorder counseling to the Palm Beach County area including West Palm Beach and Palm Beach. PTSD is NOT just an issue of combat veterans, in fact if a person serving in the military has had a strong, healthy childhood, the chance of developing PTSD following combat is significantly diminished as their resilience can protect them. Any exposure to an overwhelming event including but not limited to: abuse, rape, kidnapping, car/plane accident with fatalities, severe illness, loss of a loved one after a deteriorating illness, loss of a pet in a traumatic way, etc, can lead to PTSD. It doesn’t have to be a life sentence.
WHAT IS POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER?
You feel on edge. Nightmares or intrusive thoughts come unwelcomed on a regular basis. You find it more and more difficult to function and are isolating more and more from those you love and things you used to enjoy. Wondering what it is?
PTSD is a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after you’ve seen or experienced a traumatic event that has overwhelmed your ability to cope. Some symptoms diagnostic of PTSD include:
- Re-experiencing the original trauma(s) through flashbacks, intrusive thoughts or nightmares
- Avoidance of people, places or things that remind you of the original event
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep
- Anger or irritable outbursts
- Emotional “numbing” or cutting off from emotions
- Feeling detached
- Loss of interest in normal activities
- Difficulty concentrating
- Heightened startle response
Depending upon the experience, the person frequently feels guilty about surviving the event, leaving them with survivor’s guilt. People with PTSD are at higher risk for:
- Alcohol and Substance Abuse
- Panic attacks/ anxiety
- Sex Addiction, Affairs, Pornography Addiction
- Suicide or Suicidal Thoughts
